5 Simple Ways to Care for Your Laptop

Could you be hurting your laptop without even knowing it?

WhatLaptops.com reports that across six leading computer manufacturers (including Apple, HP, and Microsoft), the average lifespan of a laptop computer is only four years before a replacement is needed. Thankfully, the experts at Simplified Computers have five easy tips to help your laptop last much, much longer.

1. Protection

When traveling with your laptop, use padded protections, like a laptop sleeve or carrying case (like this Case Logic Laptop Case). A simple drop could result in knocking loose critical components, like your hard-drive or motherboard.

2. Be Careful with Food and Drinks

“One of the most common reasons we see people bringing their laptops into the store is because they’ve had some kind of food-related disaster, especially with drinks,” said Todd Rigg, store manager at Simplified Computers. “My advice would be that if you’re eating or drinking something, keep your computer as far away as possible.”

If you absolutely must have your drink nearby, use a lidded bottle to avoid spilling onto your laptop. Likewise, be careful when eating messy foods or sauces.

3. Use Antivirus and a Firewall

If your computer is connected to the Internet, you’ll need antivirus and firewall protections to keep your device safe from hackers and data thieves. Simplified Computers provides a number of personal IT services, using cutting-edge software that will protect your device and keep it running longer.

4. Keep Your Computer Cool

If you hear your laptop fan running louder than usual, your system could be at risk for overheating. This can cause damage to your internal components, leading to slow down and eventual crashes. Avoid using your laptop on soft surfaces (like a bed), due to the fabric fibers commonly preventing airflow. Try to find a cool and hard surface for your computer to prevent overheating and encourage airflow. You can also invest in a cooling pad, laptop fan, or even a canned air device to provide instant system relief.

5. Be Good to Your Battery

Laptop batteries will only last for a few years, so try not to leave them charging constantly. When the battery is done charging, unplug the power cable or remove the battery. You should also charge your battery fully before unplugging the power cable.
